College: How To Choose Your Major

Your college or university major may seem like the most important decision of your life. And it certainly is important. it can help you choose a career path that will stick with you for a long time. Whether or not you feel equipped to make this important decision or not, a few guidelines can help you along the way.

As a word of warning, don't make this decision lightly. This isn't just choosing the course load that you will be taking over the next few years but could potentially place you on a career path that will last the rest of your life. Take some time to consider the implications well. After all you probably don't want to study to be a lawyer if you're afraid to talk in front of people. At the very least, you may have to get over your stage fright in order to be effective.

Aptitude Tests Can Point You In The Right Direction

Aptitude tests are designed to reveal things about you, your likes and dislikes, and potential career paths that may be suited to you personally. Aptitude tests are usually available from your career counselor or you can find some online. Ask your career or guidance counselor if they have any recommendations for you.

Study Your Course Schedule

Your college or university probably has literature available about the different fields of study available. But your course schedule can reveal a lot about the types of classes that you will have to take along the way. Certainly take some time to talk to some of the professors that teach in your field of study. And don't hesitate to talk to other students about that field of study.

Make sure that you understand the courses and requirements that you may encounter along the way. Don't worry if it seems that a course of study might be difficult. Difficulties are to be expected in any path that is worthwhile. With these obstacles make sure to ask the professors about those trouble spots. Understanding why they are included can give you the strength to persevere.

Check Online For Resources About Your Chosen Field of Study

With the internet available, you have a multitude of resources available to you. Spend some time checking relevant industry blogs and discussion forums. These tools can help shed some light on an industry or field of study.

Don't forget to check growth patterns for your chosen industry. You want a good understanding if there will be jobs available to you by the time you graduate. Professional associates can help you draw back the veil a bit on your industry. They usually have job availability projections available.

Interview Career People Further Down the Road in your Chosen Career Path

Interviewing career professionals in your chosen field can go a long way to shedding light on your career choice. If at all possible, try to spend some time alongside someone that is already working in the industry that you have chosen. Try to understand how the typical student advances in this career. Most people who are working successfully in a career, will be glad to help you better understand how their industry works. Be resourceful. Ask your career counselor or other people that you may to see if anybody can take some time with you.

Look for an Internship

A vital part of your education will probably include an internship. Take advantage of this time of your education to give you a solid picture of what your life will be like after you graduate.

In Conclusion

If you come to the conclusion that you don't like your chosen major, do a little further research and don't worry too much about changing your major. It is much more important to find a career that suits you rather then pursue a career that you don't enjoy. Life is too short to work at something that you don't like doing.
